The winter blues can affect young children causing them to have increased sadness, anxiety, lack of energy and withdrawal from social activities. What can we do as parents and caregivers to combat the effects of winter's darkness?
Bundling up and getting outside everyday is vital. Despite winter's chill, fresh air is a great way to feel more alive and connected to the world. Proper gear is needed - warm coats, hat, scarves, gloves and boots. Take the time to check in with mother nature.
Second, it's improtant to get some moderate exercise everyday - at least 30-60 minutes of vigorous playtime. Add in laughter and silliness for more of a boost.
Keep your home as sunny as possible. Open the shades and blinds to let in the sun shine at every opportunity.
Finally, eating plenty of fruits, vegetables and whole grains while avoiding sugar and simple carbohydrates helps kids feel great from the inside out.
Stay warm! Hang in there! Only 52 more days until SPRING!
