The Long-Term Effects of Childhood Obesity
Childhood obesity is a serious health concern that casts a long shadow on future well-being. Learn the long-term effects of childhood obesity and how to protect your child’s health now and later.

Affecting roughly 24% of kids between ages 2 and 17, obesity is a serious health concern that has the potential to shape health outcomes for decades. Kids struggling with their weight may continue to have issues into adulthood, affecting their physical and mental well-being.

Obesity is a complex disease, and no single treatment works for all. However, tackling weight issues early may prevent long-term health consequences.

At Child & Adolescent Health Center in Lathrup Village, Michigan, Dr. Fiona Carroll understands the struggles both parents and kids face regarding weight. We work closely with families, helping them create habits that support a healthy weight.

In this month’s blog, we want to discuss the long-term effects of childhood obesity and how early interventions can protect your child’s future health.

About childhood obesity

Children grow at their own rate, and it isn’t uncommon for some kids to pack on extra pounds before a growth spurt. Unfortunately, for many kids, that extra weight doesn’t always turn into added height.

We use the body mass index (BMI) to diagnose obesity. The BMI estimates body fat by comparing weight to height. Kids aged 2 and older with a BMI at or above the 95th percentile on the standard growth chart are considered obese.

Although genetics and family history can play a role in the development of childhood obesity, most experts agree that lifestyle choices are largely responsible for the weight struggles that affect so many kids today, including:

  • High intake of highly processed foods
  • Little physical activity
  • Too much screen time
  • Poor sleep habits
  • High levels of stress

Not having access to safe places to play or healthy food also makes it difficult for kids to maintain a healthy weight.

Long-term effects of childhood obesity

Carrying excess weight during the developmental years not only affects children’s health during their youth but may have profound effects on their health as they grow older.

Long-term health effects of childhood obesity include a greater risk of developing:

  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Heart disease
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Sleep apnea
  • Osteoarthritis

Childhood obesity also affects mental and emotional well-being. Kids with obesity are more likely to have low self-esteem, depression, and anxiety. If not addressed at an early age, these mental health issues are likely to persist into adulthood.

Further, early weight gain sets the stage for lifelong weight and health challenges, increasing the risk of chronic disease and premature death.

Treating childhood obesity

Childhood obesity is a chronic disease that requires medical intervention. With the right approach, we can help your child achieve a healthier weight and reduce the risk of long-term health problems.

There’s no simple fix to childhood obesity, but helping your child make better food choices, find ways to stay active, and get more sleep is a good place to start. The lifestyle habits they create at a young age benefit their health now and later.
